Scripture context: 1 Corinthians 14:40

Writer/Speaker:
The Apostle Paul wrote the letter (1 Corinthians) to the church in Corinth—a diverse, gifted, but often chaotic community of believers.

Audience:
The Corinthian Christians, who were experiencing a lot of confusion and disorder in their worship gatherings. They had many spiritual gifts—like prophecy, speaking in tongues, and teaching—but things were getting out of hand.

What Was Going On:
In their gatherings, people were talking over each other, speaking in tongues without interpretation, and turning worship into a spiritual free-for-all. Everyone wanted to contribute (which wasn’t bad!), but it created confusion and distraction instead of clarity and edification.

Paul spends chapter 14 teaching the Corinthians how to operate in their gifts with purpose, respect, and clarity, so that the church could grow and be encouraged—not overwhelmed.
